How we built a ‘Noctua Edition’ Prusa MK4S 3D printer

10/12/2025

When our friends at Prusa approached us with the idea of producing their renowned Prusament PLA filaments in our signature colours, it didn’t take much convincing: What a great way to celebrate our 20-year anniversary and to give back to the 3D printing community that has come up with such fantastic designs that leverage the advantages of our fans in applications we never even thought of before!

“Prusa 3D printers are a staple in our engineering and prototyping. We’re using them on a daily basis, and they have never let us down even after years of heavy usage,” says Andreas Wagner (Head of Noctua’s Vienna R&D Team). “We’re proud and honoured to team up with Prusa to launch filaments in our signature colours, so we’ve used the new Prusament PLA Noctua Beige and Prusament PLA Noctua Brown to build a custom ‘Noctua Edition’ of the Prusa MK4S, one of the workhorses in our labs.”

Prusa’s renowned MK4S printer integrates various 3D printed parts. Since the models for these parts are available through Printables.com, they are easy to replace if necessary, but this also makes it possible to thoroughly customise the printer with modified designs or, in our case, different colours.

Since we were short on time, we started out printing all the required parts on a Prusa CORE One L, which we enjoy using not only due to its larger build volume but also due to its blistering speed.

In the meantime, we replaced the MK4S’s hotend fan with our NF-A4x10 5V PWM. As some of our 3D printers are operating close to our workplaces, reducing fan noise levels as much as possible is crucial to ensure a pleasant working environment. From our experience, switching the stock fan to the NF-A4x10 5V PWM improves acoustic comfort while still ensuring excellent printing quality with low to mid temperature filaments such as PLA or PET-G.

Once the parts were done, it was time for assembly, and while we built up several Prusa printers over the years, this one felt special…

Just like its siblings in our labs, this MK4S will crank through kilometres of filament in the years to come – day in, day out. However, every prototype printed on this ‘Noctua Edition’ printer will have a unique aura to it!

About Prusa

Josef Prusa in his 3D printer farm

Prusa Research was founded as a one-man startup in 2012 by Josef Prusa, a Czech hobbyist, maker and inventor - and now one of the most famous names in the 3D printing industry.

Josef found his passion for 3D printers as a student of University of Economics in Prague. That was in 2009. Back then, he considered 3D printing to be nothing but a hobby... the rest is history!
