Thanks to its high quality MOSFET transistors, the NV-FH2 supports 5V, 12V and 24V fans. This makes it a great choice not only for use with 12V PC case fans, but also for 5V-based home ventilation setups as well as 24V environments such as 3D printers or industrial applications.
While only 4-pin PWM fans can be controlled via PWM, the NV-FH2’s keyed output connectors are also compatible with 3-pin fans, so it can also be used to run multiple 3-pin fans from a single power source and to adjust their speed simultaneously by reducing the input voltage.
The NV-FH2 can be powered either via it’s 5.5mm (outer diameter) / 2.1mm (inner diameter) barrel connector input using a power supply such as the optional NV-PS1 or via the 4-pin PWM input. If both inputs are connected, the NV-FH2 will automatically take power from the barrel connector and only use the 4-pin port for PWM control and RPM monitoring.
When powered via the barrel connector, the NV-FH2 can run fans with a combined power draw of up to 60W. When using the 4-pin PWM input only, the maximum power draw is limited to 22W using an auto-resetting safety fuse to protect the connector. Each output port is protected by a self-resetting 0.75A fuse.
The NV-FH2 supports cascading in the sense that up to ten NV-FH2 units can be daisy-chained in order to run and control up to 71 fans. The NV-FH2’s control circuit with single bus buffer keeps PWM signals stable without jeopardising TTL logic levels on the follower boards.
If both its 5.5mm barrel and 4-pin input ports are connected, the NV-FH2 will draw power via the barrel connector and use the 4-pin port only for PWM control and RPM monitoring. This way, it is possible to control fans with high power consumption safely without risking damage to the host device connected to the 4-pin port.
The NV-FH2’s 4-pin input is protected with a 1.85A safety fuse so that the connectors specified current limit cannot be exceeded. Additionally, each fan connector is fused separately with 0.75A to prevent overcurrent on the individual outputs.
The NV-FH2 features a sophisticated inrush current protection that prevents the connected fans from being damaged if a fan with high inrush current is connected or if there are transients from the power input.
All fan ports of the NV-FH2 feature white status LEDs that light up if an RPM signal is being received and go off if the fan stops or fails. For more sophisticated watchdog functionality, the RPM signal of the fan connected to output port 1 is transmitted via the 4-pin input port and can be processed by PC motherboards or other devices such as single board computer systems (e.g. Arduino, Raspberry Pi, etc.).
Thanks to advanced flank control measures, the NV-FH2’s status LEDs don’t flicker and always show the correct on/off state when a fan is blocked or stopped even if the RPM signal from the fan becomes slightly unstable, which is common at low fan speeds.
Unlike the NA-FH1, the NV-FH2 features a removable top cover that can be put on the hub for applications where the status LEDs should be hidden or where the PCB should be protected from dust, touch or mechanical impact.
The NV-FH2 features integrated neodymium magnets that make it stick to any magnetic surface such as steel PC case panels. For mounting to non-magnetic surfaces, the NV-FH2’s four 4.1mm diameter screw holes make screw-mounting or fixing with cable ties a breeze.
The NV-FH2 is ideal for controlling multiple fans using the NA-FC1 controller. Thanks to a reverse-power design on the 4-pin input of the NV-FH2, the NA-FC1 can control the connected fans even if the hub is powered via 5.5mm barrel connector and there is no other connection or input on the 4-pin interface.
The NV-FH2 can be powered off the mains using the optional NV-PS1 power supply that makes it super easy to run fans off the mains in just about any environment. The NV-PS1 supports both 230V and 115V and comes with modular plugs (EU/UK/US type).
Unlike many cheap fan hubs, the NV-FH2 has been thoroughly tested for product safety and EMC compliance. Carrying CE, UKCA, and UL certifications and meeting all applicable standards (EN 62368-1, EN 55035, EN 55032, UL-62368), it is a safe, quality device through and through.
Noctua products are renowned for their impeccable quality and outstanding longevity. Like Noctua’s fans and heatsinks, the NV-FH2 is a robust, dependable product that has been painstakingly engineered to stand the test of time.
